Alpine Club of Canada Vancouver Section is offering participant slots for an upcoming mountaineering trip from July 9 to 13th at the Jim Haberl Hut. The Jim Haberl Hut is a remote, fully-equipped alpine refuge nestled in the Serratus-Dione Col of the Tantalus Range in British Columbia. Maintained by the Vancouver Section, it sleeps 12 and serves as a basecamp for club activities year round.

Ontario Alliance of Climbers is once again hosting the Beaver Valley Climbing Festival from August 14-16. Our Section participates in the festival by hosting a ‘Climbing Meet Up’. We are looking for ACC member that are willing to volunteer and help promote our club at the festival.

What to expect:

• Setup top ropes for beginner climbers (location TBD; likely Metcalfe) by leading easy sport routes at the beginning of the day
• Monitoring participants, ensuring safe belaying, waiver signing and light mentorship
• Hosting an ACC booth, advertising our section and promoting ACC events.

Topic: Join us as Jonathan Oldenburger recounts his trek through Nepal’s Langtang Valley to climb Yala Peak (5700m) – four years after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Along the way: yak herds, rhododendrons, heartbreaking decimation of the Langtang village, and the incredible resilience of the Tamang people rebuilding their community and tourism industry. All while battling dehydration, sunburn, and a few unexpected gear failures on the push to the summit.

Applications for the 2025 ACC Climbing Leadership Course are now being accepted. This year’s course will be held in Squamish, BC from August 7th to 10th, 2026 with two evening online sessions on August 3rd and 4th, 2026. It will focus on the skills needed to run a top rope crag session, including hazard management, anchor building, rope management, rescue skills and more!

The trip is posed on ACC National’s Website as Section Climbing Leadership Course; you will need to login to apply. Also note that application requires section endorsement; please contact Stanis Yu at leadership@alpineclubtoronto.ca if you are interested in applying and have questions.

Applicants will be required to submit a complete application no later than midnight (PT) on May 31st, 2026.

WHEN: Saturday, May 9th, 2026 (10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.)

WHERE: Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area 

DESCRIPTION: A rock climbing outing/clinic at Rattlesnake Point where participants will review some basic knots and how to set up top-rope anchors on bolts and then get an opportunity to do some top-rope climbing. Open to both beginner and more-experienced climbers. All participants should know how to tie-in to a rope and how to belay a climber on top-rope (participants that don’t will be provided instruction).

Participants will review these basic knots: overhand, figure of eight and figure of eight on a bight, fisherman’s knot, double-fisherman’s knot, clove hitch, water knot (for webbing)

Participants will review three basic top-rop anchor set-ups: basic tied-off equalized anchor, sliding X with limiter knots, quad anchor

MAX. PARTICIPANTS: 15, at the trip leader’s discretion and pending volunteer availability.

REQUIRED GEAR: Climbing helmet (mandatory), climbing harness, climbing shoes, belay device and pear-shaped locking carabiner, personal tether (e.g. sewn sling with locking carabiner, PAS with locking carabiner, Petzl Connect, etc., …) and any other personal items (e.g. lunch & snacks for the day, water, appropriate clothing, day pack, etc., …)

OPTIONAL GEAR:
If you have this gear, you are welcome to bring it to the clinic:

• anchor building equipment for top-rope
• dynamic climbing rope 60+ m

COST: Participants are responsible for their own park reservations and gate fees to Conservation Halton Parks.

WAIVER: Please read the ACC waiver before attending. Members should ensure that their membership is up to date and that they have signed the online waiver. Non members should be prepared to sign a full-colour, paper copy of the waiver in ink upon arrival to the event.

We’re pleased to report yet another successful year of garbage clearing at Tiffany Falls and Devil’s Punchbowl along Hamilton’s Escarpment. Throughout the year, various garbage and trash finds its way into these conservation areas; some with steep incline – a perfect opportunity for our club to lend a hand on cleanup week! Particularly for Tiffany Falls, our club has interest in keeping these areas clean as we benefit from ice climbing there – when the weather cooperates. Huge shoutout to all the volunteers that pushed through on the cleaning efforts despite somewhat questionable weather this past weekend.

For any members interested in Wilderness First Aid, there are a few upcoming courses to be run in CFB Kingston from April 25 to May 1. Course will be delivered by Canadian Wilderness Medical Training, a reseller of Canadian Red Cross Training. Upcoming course segments are as follows:
