WHERE: Pottery Road starting at Todmorden Mills parking lot

DESCRIPTION:
Join us for some off-season (or on-season for some?) training and social (almost) every Wednesday for the months of January, February and March; excluding February 12.

Hike either along Pottery Road (paved) or for a more rugged experience, take the Dave Money Hill trail.  Alternatively, combine the two and average a 9% incline, 37m elevation gain over approximately 400m.  Maintain a steady pace/effort that should not feel hard at any time during the workout but may leave you pleasantly tired at the end.   Keep your heart rate and morale high!  Meet all weather unless it’s truly miserable.

Itinerary:
Meet at Todmorden Mills parking lot – Workout starts 6:45 pm SHARP.
START – Hike laps on either Pottery Road or Dave Money Hill Trail or both.
Warmup – 10 minutes.
Hiking – 1 hour.
Cool down – 5 minutes.
FINISH – Dairy Queen (1040 Broadview Ave) or a pub on Danforth depending on interest.

  Dave Money Hill starts on Oxbow Trail at Todmorden Wildflower Preserve near the rear of the parking lot – take the right fork to start Dave Money Hill Trail.  Trail finishes on a road north of Helliwell Place, ~250m south of Dairy Queen.

GEAR: Hiking boots/running shoes, microspikes (condition dependent), appropriate clothing for weather conditions, water, and headlamp. Weighted backpack optional. Depending on weather the pavement/trail could be slippery.

DESCRIPTION: Basic level of Wilderness & Remote First Aid that covers material in Standard First Aid & CPR, plus special material on techniques for wilderness and remote areas. Course also offers strategies for providing extended care for up to 24 hours. Part of the course is taught in an outdoor setting and requires greater physical activity and endurance than typical first aid training.  No other pre-requisites required.

Additionally on site there is a cliff with a large ledge, making it a great teaching setting for climber focused first aid and rescue.

DESCRIPTION: The summer solstice camping, climbing, and hiking weekend at Rattlesnake point is an opportunity to enjoy some of the longest days of summer. Participants bring their own food, climbing/hiking gear, and camping necessities. Note: there is a large shelter with several picnic tables on the campsite.

MAX PARTICIPANTS: 20, at the trip leader’s discretion.

GEAR: Helmet (mandatory for climbing and walking in the crag area), harness, tent, sleeping bag, camping gear, and any other personal items (e.g. knife, fork, spoon, plate, bowl, cup, cooking equipment, food, snacks, water, clothing, sunscreen, bug spray, etc., …).

(OPTIONAL) GEAR: anchor building cordelettes/webbing, locking carabiners and rope.

COST: Participants will share the cost of camping/firewood based on the number of participants. Approximately $30-40 for 2 nights camping depending on the number of participants (includes park entry and campsite fees). Note: $30 non-refundable deposit required at sign-up.

WHERE: Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area (Reservations required).

DESCRIPTION:  This 9 hour course is designed to give you a solid foundation in performing climbing-related rescue techniques for rappelling, top rope climbing and single pitch lead climbing. You will learn how to ascend and descend your rope with various techniques, conduct mid-rope load transfers, tie rescue knots and hitches, tie off and escape your belay, lower injured climbers and remove hair pulled into a belay or rappel device. With this knowledge, you could perform self-rescue for many issues you might encounter while climbing, turning some major problems into minor inconveniences.

List of course topics:
– Escape from rappel and belay devices and jammed friction back-ups.
– Passing knots while rappelling, ascending or lowering (two ropes tied together or a damaged section of rope isolated with an Alpine Butterfly knot).
– Tying off different types of belay devices to allow hands free.
– Building a ground anchor and escaping ground belays (top rope and lead).
– Lowering a second with different types of belay devices (injured or can not finish the route).
– Ascending the rope with friction hitches and using a grigri.
– Ascending the rope up to a fallen lead climber that needs assistance (possibly unconscious or injured) and lowering together with the injured climber.
– Lowering the leader when there is not enough rope (but the leader is able to assist and follow instructions).
– Lowering the leader when there is not enough rope and the leader is not able to assist (possibly unconscious, injured, or does not understand instructions).

Please be prepared for a full day of course material and activity. Pack appropriately for the weather (The course will operate rain or shine) and bring enough food and water for a full day.

PREREQUISITES:  None. However, knowledge of basic skills (lead belaying, etc..) is recommended.

GEAR:  Helmet (mandatory) and personal equipment is recommended (harness, belay and rappel device, carabiners, PAS, climbing shoes). ONE AXE can supplement any missing equipment if required.

NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS:  Minimum: 4, Maximum 10. Participation will be confirmed upon payment.

COST:  $339.00 ($300+HST per person). The course fee is non-refundable, non-transferable and due upon sign-up. Participants may also be responsible for their own park reservations and gate fees to Conservation Halton Parks.
