WHAT: Backcountry Ski Touring and Winter Camping

WHERE: Algonquin Park, meet at West Gate registration

DESCRIPTION:
Come and enjoy the best of winter in beautiful Algonquin Park. After registering for backcountry travel at the West Gate we will ski a two day loop into the interior of the Park, stopping to camp at a wilderness campsite of our choice.

We will ski on summer canoe routes that will give us a mix of typical Algonquin portages plus lake travel in between. Even though late February often provides excellent ski conditions we could see all manner of snow from deep and wet to hard and crusty.

Participants should have intermediate or better ski skills and have skis suitable for backcountry travel. Experience with late season camping in colder weather would be helpful but not essential. Contact the trip leader below for more details on what to expect and detailed equipment requirements.

COST: The Park charges a nominal backcountry use fee (approximately $13) and a fee for overnight parking.

GEAR: Skis, boots, poles, should be suitable for untracked backcountry travel. Skis may be light Alpine Touring to wide x-c backcountry skis. Metal edges are generally not essential in Algonquin Park backcountry.

The trip leader will provide a detailed list of equipment required however an essential piece of gear is a suitable sleeping bag that will work down to -15c. This could be a true winter sleeping bag or a three season bag with an overbag. Once again, contact the trip leader to discuss detailed equipment requirements.
