Victoria Day Weekend Back Country Hike
When: May 18-20, 2019
Where: Bruce Trail from Burlington, through Mt Nemo, Crawford Lake, Kelso, and Niagara Escarpment to Speyside Nature Reserve
Total 67 kms
Meet at Car Shuttle Location: Speyside Nature Reserve
Start Time: 9 a.m. on May 18, 2019
Join me for three days, two nights of hiking on the Bruce Trail. Bag some KMs. Test your gear and get in shape for extended trips later in the season. There will be hiking on Bruce Trail Maps 9 to 12, and immersing yourself in the outdoors.
Min participants: 2 people that have a car for the car shuttle. Max 8 participants.
It would be ideal to have RSVPs by Tuesday May 7 should we need to cancel.
Day 1: Approx 18 KMs
Meet at 9 a.m. at Speyside Nature Reserve: 7838 15 Side Rd, Acton, ON L7J 2M1
Car shuttle 50 minutes to intersection of Snake Rd and Bruce Trail
Begin to hike at 10 a.m. to Wilderness Site at Mt Nemo Scout Camp: 4284 Side Rd 2, Burlington, ON L7R 3X4
Pace: Medium pace to ease into the hike. Limber up to be ready for day 2.
Day 2: Approx 26.5 KMs
Overnight: Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area
Pace: Early start, fast pace, minimal breaks. Might feel sore and stretch of endurance. Soak in the sunset.
Day 3: Approx 22.5 km
Finish: Speyside Nature Reserve
Pace: Early start, medium pace, minimal breaks. Will be sore! Car shuttle back.
Gear – Camping gear (tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, stove). Hiking gear (clothing, good shoes, headlamps), food and water for the weekend. Check out this useful site: https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/day-hiking-checklist.html
Notes:
Alcohol is prohibited in the campsites.
Assume all cooking is done with backpacking stoves though campfires might be possible.
Whatever you pack in you must pack out.
Participants will be contacted to arrange non-mandatory car pooling, sharing of tents, stoves and food.
Pre-plan to prevent blisters
Bring cash for possible entrance fees and an emergency Uber (cough cough)
Cost: Assuming 4 participants, the cost of camping and booking fees are estimated to be between $40 – $50 per person for stay of two nights. Assuming 8 participants, costs will decrease significantly. Your food, gas and entrance fees are at your own cost. Some conservation areas charge an entrance/parking fee around $7. If you have one, carry your Bruce Trail Membership Card with you. Members walking through are exempt from the entrance fee. In Halton, members with cards also park free. It is ACC policy to include in all pricing a 3% PayPal cost for using invoicing services. A non-refundable/non-transferable deposit is required from all participants. This deposit of $50 must be paid before a participant is added to the list of attendees. Prices are subject to change due to unforeseen events or costs, and participants are responsible for any overflow costs.
