Climbing weekend

CANCELLATION! We regret that this climbing weekend has been cancelled.  


 Two hours ago word came from Smart’s Marina that urgent repair is needed. 


[“Service department wanted to let you all know that the Club Boat will be out of commission for this weekend. There is an internal fuel leak and parts are on order. Vessel is dangerous to operate in its current condition. The boat should be back in operation by mid next week. Thank you for your understanding. Regards….”]


And  minutes ago I just learned that Smart’s mechanic was injured on the job and had to be taken to hospital so some sort of quick work-around isn’t likely. 


Sorry about the last-minute notice, but without the boat we can’t run a real climbing weekend.

The cliff at Bon Echo is in a beautiful setting, rising 300 feet out of Lake Mazinaw. There is a large number of existing trad routes, from 5.0 to 5.12. However, there is no sport climbing. 

Because the cliff lies within a provincial park, there are rules that must be observed (mandatory helmets is one). Make yourself familiar with them at the section website: alpineclubtoronto.ca/bonecho/

The ACC hut is on the far side of the lake, and most climbers get there by the club boat. Usual pickup times at the public dock on North Mazinaw Heights Rd. are 10:30 p.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Other times must be arranged ahead of time with the custodian.

HUT FEES: Members: $20 per day/night. Non-members: $40 per day/night. Fees include boat transport to the dock and cliff.

WHAT TO EXPECT: The hut is for cooking and eating only, with dinnerware and cooking equipment provided. Climbers sleep in their own tents.There is a limited number of campsites. Please pack out your garbage. The last boat trip to the dock is at 5 p.m. Sunday (unless the custodian advises otherwise). Please respect the custodian’s right to go home at a reasonable hour.
