Bon Echo

Good news everyone! We will be opening Bon Echo June 23rd! You can find our booking instructions and Covid protocols on our website. After navigating the recently announced government Phased approach to opening, the Toronto section is now preparing to re-open the Bon Echo property.  There were many discussions to ensure we are complying with the new COVID regulations, while ensuring the safest and quickest way to open. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we all implement these regulations, processes and begin opening the hut. Ontario’s restrictions on public gatherings mean we must limit how many people can be […]

A quick update from the ACC Toronto on opening the Bon Echo Property this summer I know we’re all eager to get out climbing at Bon Echo as soon as possible, and I want to let you know that we’re watching the government updates very closely. We’re interpreting they’re meanings as it relates to the hut and opening The Bon Echo property and marinas, as they are also needed to be opened in order for us to get the boat. For now, it looks like capacity limits will be similar to last year(due to government rules), but the way to […]

In March 2021, a climber in Utah inadvertently bolted three routes (about 5.3) on top of and near Native American rock art, estimated to be 1,000 year old petroglyphs. The climber who had mistakenly identified the rock art as modern-day graffiti, has since taken responsibility for his conduct and has openly apologized for his mistake. As climbers, this incident shows us that we need to do a better job educating new climbers the importance of practicing a Leave No Trace ethic which includes respecting sacred sites as well as historic and prehistoric cultural resources. “Mazinaw” is an Algonquin word meaning “picture” or […]

While summer is a few months away it’s a good time to start planning for (hopefully) getting back to Bon Echo. There’s always a lot to do at the hut and on the property and we know many of you have some great ideas and generously help out with its maintenance and up-keep. In addition to that, this year we are setting up a committee for anyone who wants to take a more active role in the hut, the boat, the dock, bookings, protocols and more. If you have some good ideas, just want to help out or have some […]

June 22-23, 2019 The Bon Echo 101 weekend has become a Toronto Section tradition. Climbers who have never been to Bon Echo for climbing are teamed up with experienced climbers to introduce them to this beautiful area.  Bon Echo has a large number of trad routes (no sport routes) on a cliff rising out of the lake and only accessible by boat or canoe. Because the cliff lies within a provincial park, there are rules that must be observed (mandatory helmets is one). Make yourself familiar with them at the section website: alpineclubtoronto.ca/bonecho/ It is strongly recommended that you plan […]

We regret to be cancelling climbing at Bon Echo on the Victoria Day long weekend. However, the extreme flooding on the Mazinaw Lake this spring has cost us two crucial weeks in the renovation process. The hut is still a construction site and the large volunteer work party set for the May 11 weekend had to be moved back to the long weekend. The flooding hobbled Smart’s Marina’s efforts to get its docks set up, so we couldn’t have our boat in the water as early as we were hoping to. This had a domino effect. The builder lost two […]

Dear Members! We are getting really close to the completion of the renovations to the Bon Echo Hut! We could not have completed the project without the support of our amazing volunteers who have helped cut down trees, carry material across the lake, and make the overall experience fun. As we start to cross the finish line, there are still a number of items that need to be done and we need more help! We are looking for volunteers for the following dates: Saturday March 9 – Sunday March 10 Material transport on the ice We will be transporting the […]
