A quick update from the ACC Toronto on opening the Bon Echo Property this summer I know we’re all eager to get out climbing at Bon Echo as soon as possible, and I want to let you know that we’re watching the government updates very closely. We’re interpreting they’re meanings as it relates to the hut and opening The Bon Echo property and marinas, as they are also needed to be opened in order for us to get the boat. For now, it looks like capacity limits will be similar to last year(due to government rules), but the way to […]

In March 2021, a climber in Utah inadvertently bolted three routes (about 5.3) on top of and near Native American rock art, estimated to be 1,000 year old petroglyphs. The climber who had mistakenly identified the rock art as modern-day graffiti, has since taken responsibility for his conduct and has openly apologized for his mistake. As climbers, this incident shows us that we need to do a better job educating new climbers the importance of practicing a Leave No Trace ethic which includes respecting sacred sites as well as historic and prehistoric cultural resources. “Mazinaw” is an Algonquin word meaning “picture” or […]

Dear ACC Members and Volunteers,Some of you may be wondering what the ACC-YYZ is planning for the spring and summer with regard to outdoor activities and the opening of the Bon Echo season. Your board of directors has two main priorities in mind: your safety during this pandemic, and your need to get out and enjoy our outdoor activities.Following the recommendations of Ontario Public Health, we will resume outdoor activities once the City of Toronto moves out of the Grey Level of restrictions. We do not know when that will be, so keep checking our website and ClimbOn for updates. If […]

Time: Tuesday March 23rd, 7:30 pm.Speaker: Roger WallisBio: Roger has been climbing for a very long time.  He joined the ACC when he emigrated to Canada in 1968 and has been a member of the Toronto Section since 1970. He was the Toronto Section’s Mountaineering Chair for 13 years and a long time member of the Leadership Committee. Roger encouraged a generation of Toronto Section members to join him in exploring some relatively unvisited parts of the Coast Ranges, Purcell’s, Selkirks, Monashee’s, Premiers, Cariboo’s, the Rockies, and in particular, six climbing trips to the St.Elias mountains. Following Ted Rosen’s classic […]

With the recent changes to restrictions in various municipalities, many of our members are wondering if the ACCYYZ will resume running outdoor winter activities in regions where those activities are now permitted. After once again consulting with local public health units in those regions, and out of respect for their requests (as well as those of the Province of Ontario) that people not travel between regions, we have taken the difficult and heartbreaking decision not to reopen our outdoor activities at this time. It is our hope that as Covid numbers decrease, and when Toronto moves out of the Grey […]

While summer is a few months away it’s a good time to start planning for (hopefully) getting back to Bon Echo. There’s always a lot to do at the hut and on the property and we know many of you have some great ideas and generously help out with its maintenance and up-keep. In addition to that, this year we are setting up a committee for anyone who wants to take a more active role in the hut, the boat, the dock, bookings, protocols and more. If you have some good ideas, just want to help out or have some […]
